Fall Adventures in Leavenworth
Fall is the perfect time to visit Leavenworth, the
quaint Bavarian town nestled among the mountains of Washington’s
Cascade Range. The weather is mild and the summer crowds
have dissipated, yet there is still so much to do. For
instance:
Hiking: The Icicle Ridge Trail is a nice hike that
begins a mile up Icicle Road. The switchback trail up the
ridge offers great views of the valley below. When you reach the
top you can see down the other side into Tumwater Canyon.
For the truly adventurous, this is only the beginning as the
trail continues for approximately 27 miles along Icicle Ridge to
the south. It requires a Northwest Forest Pass, available at the
Leavenworth Ranger Station.
Water Adventures: River rafting takes many forms in
Leavenworth. In the fall you can experience a milder form of
rafting with scenic floats where you may see wildlife. Later in
September you may even see salmon swimming upriver (www.ospreyrafting.com).
On warmer days you might choose to float the river in your own
tubes or use a local tubing company (www.letsgotubing.com).
Festivals: Fall brings the parties! The
Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival (www.autumnleaffestival.com)
begins Friday, Sept. 23, 2011. The Salmon Festival is Oct. 1 and
