Leavenworth Chamber Hike of the Month
for July 2007

Featured Hike:  Mt. Stewart

Lake Stuart is in the Leavenworth District and though it's rated as difficult, it's well worth the effort.. You will be rewarded with spectacular and extremely varied scenery!  The trailhead is one mile past 8 Mile Trailhead on Rd 7601 (off Icicle Rd)  Each step forward rewards the hiker as you ascend through a forest primeval.. Mountaineer Creek tumbles down the mountainside and changes personality at every turn.. A log footbridge allows the hiker to cross the creek and begin climbing switchbacks until the junction is reached that will lead to either Stuart Lake or Colchuck Lake. The fork to the right leads to Stuart Lake and soon meadows with wildflowers galore come into view.  Mt Stuart and it's granite fortresses reflect in the lake at it's base. The breath-taking sight of diamond-like points of light sparkling on the sun-kissed water is a moment frozen in my heart and mind.. The 9 miles hiked that day were oh, so worth it!  By Hiker Veva Williams
