Leavenworth Centennial

The Leavenworth Centennial Parade will begin at 12 noon September 2 and winds through downtown streets. Entries will be tied to historical themes and grouped in the order of the decade in which they first appeared in Leavenworth: loggers, the first hospital, early churches and schools, renowned town marshal Dude Brown (portrayed by current Chelan County Sheriff Mike Harum), dairies and orchards, ski jumpers, local service clubs, festivals and more. Dozens of dignitaries and descendants of Leavenworth pioneers will appear in the parade along with floats, horses, antique cars, bands and special exhibits.

The U.S. Postal Service will release a special commemorative stamp cancellation that day, which will be available for purchase in City Park between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Also on sale will be commemorative coins, buttons and pins bearing the centennial logo.

At 3 p.m. in the City Park gazebo, actors and musicians will present an original radio play based on Leavenworth history. “Captain Leavenworth Meets His Maker” was written by Seattle playwright Elizabeth Heffron and is produced by Icicle Broadcasting. The live one-hour performance features talented actors, musicians and old- fashioned sound effects to guide the audience back through various scenes in the town’s colorful history. The radio theater production will be broadcast on KOHO-FM, 101.1, on Sunday, Sept. 3.
