Torin Koos
September Athlete of the Month, National XC Skiing - USOC
“No
Excuses,” those are the words Torin Koos lives by. “It’s
the time of my life to be the best.” Without his drive
and passion he would not have excelled to where he is
today. Ever since growing up in a Minnesota and watching
his father, a Biathlete, skiing came naturally. He spent
most of his childhood on the slopes with his two biggest
supporters, mom and dad.
Since the age of 12, Torin Koos has been making his mark
throughout the Cross Country Skiing circuit. Taking home
many covenanted titles from having the second fastest
time in his first World Cup appearance in 2001. However,
Torin’s road to victory was a long time coming from
Minnesota.
Days of success did not come easily. The first setback
occurred in 1999 during Koos’ freshman year at the
University of Utah; where he was on a track scholarship.
During a race, he fractured his femur; which took an
unbearable 6 months to recover from. In
February of 2006, illness struck while at the Torino
Olympics. Koos developed an infection in his lungs that
made it almost impossible to compete. Despite the
illness, Koos competed and placed a disappointing 36th.
Koos says “ I gave it all I could,” but there was
nothing he could do.
|
On the other hand, Koos has been
fortunate throughout his career. He competed in the 2002
Salt Lake City and 2006 Torino Olympic Games. Along with
the opportunity to travel around the world to places
such as Japan, Germany, Italy and New Zealand. Traveling
can be a curse and a blessing but it’s a sacrifice you
must make in order to achieve your dreams. As long as
his I-Pod is filled with Jimi Hendricks and AFI the
flight doesn’t seem so bad.
For now until Vancouver in 2010, “I will take it season
by season,” he says because there doesn’t seem to be a
rush yet.
Each day he’s getting closer to accomplishing his dream
of dominating cross country skiing. Next month Koos will
ski in the World Cup opener in
|
Germany and
hopes to be ranked in the top ten in the World.
After Cross Country skiing, Torin would like to try his
hat at being a tri-athlete. In 2009, Koos is expected
graduate from West Minister, a private college in Utah,
with a graduates degree in Marketing and Communications.
On behalf of the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center ,
we would like to congratulate Torin Koos on being named
the September Athlete of the Month and we wish you much
success in the future endeavors.
